What happens when you call 988
A trained counselor answers. You do not have to be suicidal to call, and you do not have to explain yourself well. You can say you are struggling and let them take it from there. The call is confidential. In the large majority of calls, nobody is sent to your door and no emergency services are involved. It is a conversation.
You can call for someone else too. If you are worried about a family member or a friend, 988 will talk it through with you.
